TOTAL CHILD LABOUR

In 2001, the ILO estimated that 50.2 percent of children ages 10 to 14 years in Bhutan were working. Although detailed information on the sectors in which children are working is limited, it is reported that children are often engaged in agricultural work on family farms.

CHILD SLAVERY

The Government prohibits forced or compulsory labor and there were no reports that such practices occurred. However, voluntary community service was often practiced, which included building local roads, schools and hospitals.

CHILD TRAFFICKING

The law does not prohibit trafficking in persons; however, there were no reports that persons were trafficked to, from, or within the country.

CHILD PROSTITUTION & PRONOGRAPHY

There are no reports of brothel based prostitution establishments. There have been a few cases of commercial sex workers that might be involved in street based prostitution. However, none have been identified as being children.

CHILD SOLDIERS

There were no reports of under-18s in government armed forces or armed political groups. There is no conscription to military service. The army is a volunteer force and the minimum age of recruitment is 18.And there were no reports of under-18s being recruited to the armed forces or militias
