Despite the fact that there has been an overall increase in female net enrollment, disparities between girls and boys remain. Over 50% of the country’s schools do not offer the full primary school cycle so pupils are forced to travel long distances to attend lessons. This, along with the poor sanitation and teaching facilities in schools and traditional family values, greatly discourages girls from attending school. With the help of UNICEF, the Senegalese government has prepared an EFA National Plan of Action aimed at addressing the issues, but efforts need to be accelerated.
