Is Your Country on Track?

The education system in the DRC has been in crisis since the mid-1980s due to war, internal displacement, refugee movement, natural disasters and rapid population growth. It is families themselves who have to bear the brunt of the costs of schooling (sometimes as high as $US175 per child for girls), and they are often forced to pay mainly unqualified teachers in cash or in kind for educating their children as well. Progress is extremely slow in the country, but government programmes to achieve gender parity are gradually being implemented with the help of donor intervention.
