For an End to Child Labour

Right from the drafting of ILO Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour, the Global March has been in the forefront of generating the mass support to make it the most effective tool in inspiring the worldwide actions to end child labour and its worst forms. During 1998-1999, the Convention Campaign focused on raising the profile of child labour issues and influencing decision-makers to adopt a strong and useful convention. Since the adoption in 1999, we have lobbied governments worldwide to accelerate the ratification process and kept child labour high in the world's agenda.

As of 1st April 2007, 14 of the 177 ILO member countries have still NOT ratified this crucial convention. These countries are Afghanistan, Burma, Cuba, Eritrea, Guinea-Buissau, Haiti, India, Kiribati (Republic of), Sierra Leone, Soloman Islands, Somalia, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In 2002, Global March also published Out of the Shadows, an exhaustive country-wise report on the Worst Forms of Child Labour, as also the status of ratification of international conventions.

Implementation
Global March will ensure that the commitment shown by ratification is real. Campaign will monitor governments activities
to implement Convention 182

The Global March has now shifted it’s focus to include the implementation of Convention 182 along with ratification. In order to achieve our goal of elimination of child labour, we need to see that governments go beyond ratification and implement effective laws and programmes towards this end. We are currently working on an implementation report which will highlight the status of implementation of the conventions country wise.

Main Objective:

  • To accelerate actions by every nation in order to eliminate the worst forms of child labour through monitoring, facilitating, and lobbying for ratification and full implementation of ILO Convention 138 on the Minimum Age for Employment and ILO Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour

Achievements:

  • Ensuring the civil society participation in creating and implementing an effective international instrument in ending child labour
  • Motivating a number of governments to quickly ratify ILO Convention 182
  • Broadening a network of civil society organisations working to end child labour and its worst forms
  • Improving relations and communication among IGOs, civil society organisations, trade unions, and other stakeholders to have better collaborated efforts in ending child labour
  • Providing expertise in lobbying and advocacy strategies
