About Us

The organisation was started in 1985 by Dr. Fisher in Brussels and established in Togo since 1989. The vision of WAO - Afrique is that of a world in which every child can fully enjoy all his rights, benefit from the societal protection and support of the community and be able to deliver his full potentials.

The objectives of the organisation :

  • Promote and protect the Rights of the Child in Togo and in Africa
  • Build NGO's capacity as for the effective implementation of the Rights of the Child
  • Initiate surveys and researches on violations of specific Rights of Children (trafficking, domestic labour, violence, underschooling of the girl child)
  • Help reform and harmonise the national legislation with international legal instruments relating to the rights of the child
  • Participate in the promotion of the education on Human Rights in general and the Rights of the Child in particular
  • Create the commitment of the society in favour of the fight against any forms of exploitation concerning children and women, particularly sexual exploitation, early child work, child trafficking

WAO- Afrique is a member of several committees at the local level:

  • National Commission on the Rights of the Child
  • Management National Committee for the Fight Against Child Labour (ILO/IPEC Program)
  • Reception and Rehabilitation Committee of Child Victims of Child Trafficking.

Since 1999, WAO- Afrique has assured several coordinations at the international level. It concerns the regional coordination of Global March for Francophone Africa, the coordination of Regional actions to fight against Child Trafficking in West and Central Africa (Benin - Burkina Faso - Gabon - Ghana - Niger - Togo), and the regional coordination of the Child Rights International Network for West Africa.

Activities

  • Promote and sensitise on National and International instruments ensuring children the realisation of their full potential in societies which respects childrens' rights and dignity.
  • Lobby governments for ratification and effective implementation of national and international laws and conventions for children
  • Work to eradicate the worst forms of child labour and child trafficking in Togo and in the West African Region
  • Help to alleviate domestic labour in Togo and protection
  • Manage two social rehabilitation centres for victims of domestic labour

WAO - Afrique is working on the issue of domestic child labour through two regional programs:

  • The Regional Project on Traffic and Child Domestic Labour covering six (6) countries in West and Central Africa with Anti - Slavery International
  • Regional Project on Child Domestic Workers (CDW) with Anti-Slavery International.
    The projects have established a network of non-governmental organisations which work actively for the promotion and implementation of the Conventions dealing with the protection and the rights of the children

Achievements

Significant achievements of WAO:

  • Ratification of the ILO Convention 182 by a great majority of the governments of the region.
  • Signature with ILO of a draft treaty to eradicate child domestic labour in Togo
  • Due to Afrique's concerted efforts, the problem of child labour, trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children has become a priority topic and an issue of major concern for government in Togo and in the West African Region.
  • As a Regional Coordinator for the Global March Against Child Labour WAO - Afrique has shown great dedication and commitment to bring progress in the fight against child labour and sustainable improvement in the life of children suffering from societal ignorance and behaviour in general, and from lack of institutional protection in particular. Furthermore, it has helped in the promotion of the Education for All Project, especially the promotion of free and quality education for all priorities in the Francophone West African Government's Agenda. Also communities in Togo and in the region are today more aware of the fact that the fight against child labour should be won through the challenge of children's education.

Awards:

WAO - Afrique actions won international recognition through three awards:

  • In 1995 the Director of WAO - Afrique has been elected Man of the Year by the African Magazine ''Jeune Afrique l'Intelligent''
  • In 1998: WAO - Afrique won the Plan Togo Awards
  • In 2000: WAO - Afrique received the Body Shop Human Rights Awards.
