About Us

It is a social organisation nationally registered as a non-profit association, recognised as being of Social Welfare and National Interest. The DCI movement has a consultative status for the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF). DCI is recognised by the International Movement Defence for Children International as a national section with local national and regional programs, which have impact at an international level.

DCI-Costa Rica is a sub-regional coordinator for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean of the Global March against Child Labour, as well as focal point of the Sexual Exploitation of Children. DCI also has the general coordination of the Federation of NGO´s for the Defence of Human Rights, COSECODENI which is part of the National Council for Children and Adolescents.

The purpose of the organisation lies in promotion and defense of children and adolescents to achieve recognition of their role as social subjects of rights, having as guidelines the Convention on the Rights of the Child, optional protocols and all instruments of human rights.

Activities

1) Programs against child labour

The organisation is involved in various projects like Toji project ( children who work in coffee plantations in Guanacaste and Puntarenas), Papalote project ( children who work in agriculture and dairies), Librosy Juegos Project (Educational project to help child workers continue their schooling in Pavas and Cartago regions) etc

2) Educational Programs

The projects associated with this program are as follows:

  • 100 Project - Promoting motivation for education and prevention of quitting school.
  • Aula Siete Project- Prevention of quitting schools.
  • Mediacion Escolar Project- School Violence.
  • Campana Mudial Project - promoting education for everyone.

3) Program for migrants

Binacional Project- deals with family disintegration and migrations.

4) Program for the Participation of Citizens

  • ADIN- Youth Group
  • Cines Foros- Film presentations and discussions for youth.
  • Participating teaches you to participate
  • Participating is practicing democracy
  • Meeting of Child Labourers
  • Program for National and International Internships.

5) Programs for Legal and Social Defense

Library specialised in Documentation on Human Rights of the Child (Centro specializado de Documentación en Derechos Humanos del Niño - CEDENNA-DNI)
