Us
CWIN, the
first child's rights organisation in Nepal was established
in 1987. This non-governmental social organisation strives
to build a society where the rights of children are
fully guaranteed. It acts as a voice for the children
through lobbying, campaign and pressure to the government
to protect and promote children's rights in the country,
and to end all kinds of exploitation, abuse and discrimination
against children. CWIN has been recently chosen to establish
South Asian sub regional Secretariat of Global March
at Kathmandu.
CWIN is an
active member of international networks such as the
South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude (SACCS), Child
Workers in Asia and national networks like ALLIANCE
for Human Rights and Social Justice, the Alliance Against
Trafficking in Women and Children in Nepal (AATWIN),
National AIDS Network Group, Network on Violence Against
Women and Women defend Pressure Group.
Guided by
their working principle "with children for children",
the leading organisation in Nepal has been responsible
for activities like releasing a national report on the
state rights of children, 2002, organising a consultation
with street children regarding drug habits, education
support programme for children at risk etc.
Activities
A brief study
of some of the activities undertaken by CWIN
1) Campaign
against some of the worst forms of child labour
Generated
public awareness on child labour by putting up about
100 advertising boards in 15 districts of Nepal. Furthermore,
on the occasion of the 12th International Child Rights
Day, CWIN and the Central Child Welfare Board jointly
organised a National Workshop on "Role of Child
Care Centres on Protection Child Rights."
2) Organisation
of consultative workshop with children on trafficking
CWIN organised
a National Consultative Workshop with Children on the
Review of the National Plans of Action Against Trafficking
in Children & Their Commercial Sexual Exploitation
in collaboration with the ILO's Kathmandu Office, Nepal.
3) Human
Resource Development
Conducted
60 different training and orientation programmes which
were organised for important stakeholders like teachers,
political party members, police officers, trade unionists,
social workers, students, journalists, government workers,
etc to build on human resource development in the field
of child rights.
4) Child
Right's Forum
This is
a forum for children to promote and protect the rights
of the child through direct participation of children
in school and community activities.
Achievements
In the year
2001, CWIN had been successful in supporting 7556 children
through various programmes like emergency services,
psychosocial counseling, health services, helplines,
rehabilitations, educational support programmes, vocational
training etc.
